Backsliders Magazine
Backsliders is a literary & arts magazine for those who decided to leave the church behind.
We are an online literary & arts magazine for former Christians. You may say Ex-vangelical, Devangelical, Ex-Christian, Post-Religious, deconstructing, Unsaved, Reformed, Former Fundamentalist, Post-Pentacostal… Whatever you call yourself, if the term 'Backslider' means anything to you, you’re in the right place. We want to hear your stories and see your artwork.
Mission / Purpose:
- To build a creative, thoughtful, and compassionate space for people who have left or are leaving Christianity (Ex-Evangelical, Post-Christian, deconstructing believers, etc.) to share stories, art, memory, grief, humor, and insight.
- To recreate (or reimagine) a literary & arts community and sense of belonging. Especially for those who experienced isolation when leaving church.
- To elevate high-quality writing and art that centers themes of freedom, loss, nuance, and the sometimes-awkward in-between spaces of faith shifts.
- There are countless literary & art magazines, journals, websites for Christian writers and artists - and until now, not one for Ex-Christians / Exvangelicals.
Audience:
- Exvangelicals, Ex-Christians (broadly defined) — both those who are far along in “deconstruction” and those newly questioning.
- Friends, family, or allies of Ex-Christians who want to understand.
- Readers interested in religion, freedom from religion, recovery, spirituality, and the existential.
