"God's Ark of Safety (Being Rebuilt Here)" written & performed by Casey Broadwater
Listen:
Lyrics:
Off Route 68,
a sign on the hill:
God's Ark of Safety
Being Rebuilt Here.
A skeletal frame
of rusted-out steel
has stood here unfinished
forty-odd years.
And everybody knows
the way this story goes:
a man thinks that he hears
from God.
He builds up a monument,
in hopes he'll live on through it,
then watches it crumble away.
Away, with the passing of years,
away, as his doubts turn to fears,
away with his name
on the lips of his friends,
until he is lying alone
at the end.
No ark's gonna save you,
whoever you pray to,
the flood's gonna take you
and all that you've known.
So while we've got blue skies
I'll look in your green eyes
and tend to the seeds we've sown.
Everyone should know
the thrill of letting go
and leaving the framework
to rust:
The stories we tell ourselves
in hopes that there's something else
beyond the welter,
beyond the waste,
beyond the dust to dust.
